Ko Lan is the largest island off Pattaya, and the reason people in Pattaya say that clear water means crossing over — the sea around the island is in a different class from the city beaches.
Getting there
Boats leave from Bali Hai pier in South Pattaya, in two forms:
- The scheduled ferry — about 40 minutes, inexpensive, running to a timetable, landing at Tawaen beach or the main village pier
- Speedboats — much faster, several times the price, and usually chartered
Always check the last return sailing before planning your day. Missing it and having to find a room at short notice happens every week.
Getting around the island
On the island you can rent a motorbike or take a songthaew. Some roads are steep and narrow; if steep hills are unfamiliar, take the songthaews, which run regularly between the main beaches.
Choosing a beach
- Tawaen — the main beach: busiest, with the fullest range of activities
- Samae — clear water, quieter than Tawaen
- Tien — calmer, for an actual rest
- Nual — small and peaceful
- Tong Lang — the quietest of the set, with the fewest facilities
Worth knowing
You can stay over — there is accommodation at several levels, though it fills fast on long weekends, so book ahead. Bring enough cash: card acceptance on the island is limited.
