Phanat Nikhom has wall paintings spread through the lanes of its old quarter — a project that turned existing shophouses into a walking route without stripping or restyling the neighbourhood itself.
What the paintings are about
Most draw on local subjects: bamboo basketry, the craft the district is known for; market life; and the old timber buildings that still stand in those same streets. You can look at a painting and at the thing it depicts within a few paces of each other.
Walking it
The painted spots are close together and the whole set takes little time on foot — no need to drive between them.
- Mornings give even light without shadows falling across the work
- People live here — do not enter private property for a photograph
- Combines with Phanat Nikhom market and the Phra Phanat Bodi shrine, both within walking distance
