Wat Saensuk is known as the "heaven and hell temple" for the open-air sculptures depicting the Buddhist hell realms, laid out as a path to walk in sequence.
The hell garden
The figures show the punishment attached to each sin directly, with captions explaining which sin leads to which torment. The intent is the moral instruction Thai temples have used for centuries, not horror for its own sake.
It is strong material for small children. Parents should decide before going in, and be ready to explain what is being shown.
The rest of the temple
- A newer white ordination hall, in a register completely unlike the hell garden
- Fish and turtle ponds you can feed — the part children take to
- Parking within the grounds
Conduct
This is a working temple. Dress modestly, keep your voice down, and take your shoes off before entering the buildings.
